Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park

Galloway Forest Park was the UK’s very first International Dark Sky Park, designated in 2009, and more than a decade on it remains one of the darkest places in Britain or Europe. It spreads across roughly 300 square miles of the remote Galloway Hills in south-west Scotland, deliberately managed with almost no artificial lighting.

At its core the sky reaches Bortle 1–2, with Sky Quality Meter readings above 22 recorded — genuinely world-class figures. On a clear, moonless night the Milky Way here is bright enough to cast a shadow, and the Andromeda Galaxy is an easy naked-eye target. The ranger service runs regular public stargazing events, with Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre and Bruce’s Stone among the favourite observing spots.
