Exmoor International Dark Sky Reserve · Inside

Sleeps 5 Private garden Fire pit Exmoor dark skies

Overview

Heale Farm Cottage is a traditional North Devon stone cottage, once a barn, lovingly restored in 2020 and tucked away on a small hill farm at the end of a long lane in the tiny hamlet of Heale, near Parracombe, deep within Exmoor National Park. Furnished in soft, natural tones and full of character, it sleeps five across three ground-floor bedrooms, with a slate-floored family bathroom and a well-equipped kitchen and dining area where the whole group can gather over dinner, watching the horses and lambs graze through the window. The heart of the cottage is the first-floor sitting room, with its vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, log-burning stove, snuggly sofas and open views to the moor, the perfect place to unwind with a glass of wine. Outside, a walled private garden with patio, a Kadai fire bowl and BBQ looks out over spectacular Exmoor scenery. Dog-friendly, wonderfully peaceful, and with sea and moor views, it's a proper away-from-it-all Exmoor escape, right down to the sound of the farm's own chickens preparing your breakfast eggs.

Stargazing guide

Heale Farm sits deep within Exmoor National Park, the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe (designated 2011), and the farm is an accredited Exmoor Dark Skies Friendly business with its own stargazing guidance for guests. Tucked at the end of a long lane in a tiny hamlet, with a genuinely remote farm setting and no light pollution, this is one of those rare places where the night sky reveals itself in full: on a clear night the Milky Way, planets and meteor showers appear with remarkable clarity. The private walled garden has a Kadai fire bowl and patio with superb open views over the moor, an ideal spot to wrap up warm, light the fire and watch the stars come out. One lovely detail: with no mobile signal at the property, it's genuinely easy to switch off, look up and let your eyes adjust to the dark.
